In Sweetness in Pieces, Semper Augustus—one of the most coveted tulips of seventeenth-century Holland—returns as a fragmented image composed of sugar cubes.

The flower hovers between material presence and collective projection. Its flame-like pattern remains recognisable, yet the grid interrupts the continuity of the image, allowing it to appear at once constructed and unstable.

Sugar carries its own ambiguity: it attracts through sweetness while remaining granular, soluble, and fragile. Here, it becomes both the substance of the image and a reminder of the conditions that may cause it to dissolve.

It leaves open a broader question: how desire gathers around an image, and how that desire transforms what we believe the image is worth.
